Gaining Lives

This is a survey for queer/LGBTIQA+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gamers, about the things you do, see and think while and after playing/watching video games.

Welcome to the survey for the "Gaining Lives: retrieving queer Indigenous resistances in/with video games" project!

Before you begin the survey, you will need to give your informed consent to participate. You can download the full participant information in PDF form at the link below. At the bottom of the page you will start the survey if you want to continue. It’s anonymous and you’ll have a chance to leave at any stage.

Hi, I’m Leandro and I’m a PhD student from Argentina.  I work alongside my supervisors, Professor Sandy O’Sullivan (Wiradjuri) and Dr Han Reardon-Smith, who are working on a larger project called Saving Lives.

This survey is specifically focused on queer Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and what gaming means to them, and in particular on the resistances you bring as queer Indigenous gamers.  As someone who also plays, watches and thinks about games, these questions emerge from my practice, as well as in consultation with gamers at Awesome Black

We’d really welcome your responses so that we can understand more about what matters to you. When we have the findings, we will make sure to present them back in a way that ensures you get to read about it. We also want to make sure that gaming companies get to hear about this.  I’ll be anonymising the findings, so that you can’t be identified from anything you say.

Just to be clear, when we say ‘gaming’, we mean anyone engaged with video games via playing, streaming, developing, and watching.

This project itself has been developed on Dharug Ngurra, and I acknowledge the care, customs and Knowledge that have nurtured and continue to nurture Country and Community. I pay my respect to Elders past and present.

The survey will be open until December. Once you begin, you can exit it at any time. During this time, if you have begun the survey but haven’t finished it, you may be able to use the same browser (using cookies) to come back into the survey again. Anything you have completed up to that time might be used.  If you start and decide you don’t want to keep participating, let us know and we’ll remove responses.

If you are a streamer and/or developer and are willing to participate in a follow up interview, you will be asked to provide your email address. This email list will be kept confidential by the researchers (Leandro Wallace, Prof Sandy O'Sullivan and Dr. Han Reardon-Smith).

Participation is not paid, however if you submit your email address (used only for the purpose of the competition and then deleted) at the end of the survey, you will go into the draw to win one of 20 x AUD50 vouchers.

Before we begin the survey, please note that this survey is open only to respondents that are 18+ years of age, are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and are queer/LGBTIQA+.

What do we mean when we say "queer" or "LGBTIQA+"?

The term LGBTIQA+ refers to someone who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual/aromantic/agender, and the + sign indicates other queer people whose identity is not named (like pansexual or non-binary, for instance).

To confirm that you are 18+ years of age, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, queer/LGBTIQA+, and that you consent to participate in this survey, please click "Next" to continue.
